  » Introduction

Zamila Karimi, has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA terminal) in Interior Design from University of Georgia in Athens and a Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch. professional) from The Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCIArc) in Los Angeles.

As an artist and a designer her work explores the role of art to build bridges among different groups of people regardless of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, cultural differences and political affiliations.

Through the use of elements that are common to all - such as earth, water, fire and air she investigates the changing nature of the space and time within the context of contemporary environment. According to her, “My investigation deals with the notion of time and space in transformation constantly. How it redefines and re-appropriates itself according to individual experiences. It is a process that one deals with in all aspects of life. Certain things, certain attitudes go through a transformation in a new environment, but their inherent characteristics always remain the same.”

Her art is a synthesis of her personal journey as an artist within her own culture and tradition fuesd against acquired cultural experiences in a new environment with added layers that are not always implicit. Her installations reflect the use of traditional geometrical forms and patterns found in Islamic art and architecture juxtaposed against natural materials and contemporary art mediums to create installations that echo simplicity within a complex narrative that is very personal.

She is a principal at Connexion gallery-design studio in Dunwoody and teaches as a visiting professor of architecture at Southern Polytechnic State University.
