Karey Walter » Introduction
Mixed media, in visual art, refers to an artwork in the making of which more than one medium has been employed. Visual artist Karey Walter uses photography, beeswax, oil pastels, acrylic paint, various gel mediums and varnishes in her abstract works on canvas. Her method of image transfer is by using a silicone foundation that allows the photographic image dyes to transfer into the silicone, giving a fluid three-dimensional foundation. She has a sensitive vision of her surroundings and an appreciation of various cultures. Her works have been displayed throughout the Southeast and are included in numerous private collections. http://www.kareywalter.com/ Artist StatementAs an artist, my objective is to make art that is both revealing and mysterious, but which also acts as a muse for the viewer, one that inspires memory, providing intellectual and visual stimulation. I gather my inspiration from my childhood, nature, people, books, dreams, or unexpected emotions. I create in series on different themes, working predominantly in photography and mixed media. Using Acrylic Mediums, silicone transfers, oil pastels, and resin. I work with simple forms found in nature and rely heavily on texture and color. I find that the challenge in creating mixed media artworks comes when the artist sees something beyond the surface of the subject matter. The successful execution of techniques in mixed media is only a matter of practice. The real challenge is to bring out what is beyond the surface, whether it is the feeling or the character. Once it is discovered and unearthed from the depth of the surface, then the artwork is complete. My artwork relies heavily on symbolism using emphasis with words, birds, trees, and the sky. Trees have long held a literal and symbolic fascination for humanity while the bird represents freedom and beauty. In addition to symbolism, I love working with a thick textural surface and mixing a variety of mediums together to create a unique art piece. "It is what we imagine knowledge to be: dark, salt, clear, moving, utterly free, drawn from the cold hard mouth of the world, derived from the rocky breasts forever, flowing and drawn, and since our knowledge is historical, flowing, and flown." - Elizabeth Bishop |
